Which stainless grade a part actually needs
Grade selection is a working decision rather than a preference. 304 is the general-purpose austenitic grade and covers most washdown and food-contact positions. 316 and 316L add molybdenum, which is what buys resistance in chloride-bearing and more aggressive process environments; 316L’s lower carbon matters where a part is welded and the weld region would otherwise sensitise. 410 and 420 are martensitic and harden by heat treatment, which is why they appear where a stainless part has to resist wear rather than only corrosion.
The practical consequence is that grade and geometry are separate decisions and both belong on the drawing. A shaft in 304 and the same shaft in 420 are the same turned form with different service lives in different positions. Where a drawing specifies a grade we manufacture to it; where it leaves the grade open we raise the question before cutting rather than substitute.
A flanged shaft is the clearest example of why the grade is worth stating. It combines a rotating shaft and its mounting flange in one CNC-turned piece, removing a joint that would otherwise need fastening, alignment and inspection of its own — and it is produced in SS 304 with a bearing journal, keyway and threaded end, each of which is a critical feature verified against the drawing.
Stainless parts for washdown and food-contact positions
Stainless grades go where corrosion or washdown matters, which is why so much of our stainless work sits in grain and food processing, bulk material handling and process equipment. In those positions the requirement is not only that the part resists the product it touches, but that it stands up to the cleaning chemistry used on the line around it.
Filter elements are a good illustration. They are turned and then perforated, so the hole pattern, the open area and the edge condition all matter as much as the diameters — a perforated stainless element that has been left with a burred edge collects product exactly where it is supposed to shed it.
Flanges and adaptors combine processes for the same reason. Production combines CNC turning for the faces and bores with VMC machining for the drilling patterns, giving concentric sealing faces and accurately positioned bolt circles from one manufacturing source rather than two.
Prototype through repeat batch
Quantities are quoted per requirement, from a single prototype through repeat batches. For a first article we would normally expect to discuss the drawing before cutting; for repeat supply, batch references mean an approved component is re-produced to the same drawing revision and the same inspection requirements each time.
That matters most for maintenance and replacement parts. A stainless shaft ordered eighteen months after the first batch has to fit the same housing and the same bearing as the one it replaces, which is why the approved drawing revision rather than a re-measured sample is what a repeat batch is made against.

- Do you combine turning and VMC machining on one part?

- Can you produce a stainless part if we have no drawing?
- Usually yes. A sample with dimensions and photographs is a workable starting point — we confirm the grade and the critical features before producing anything.
