What CNC turning is the right process for
CNC turning produces parts whose defining features are concentric — diameters, bores, shoulders, grooves, chamfers and threads arranged around one axis. A shaft, a bush, a pin, a spacer, a threaded adaptor: each is fundamentally a set of diameters that must hold a relationship to one another. That is what a lathe is for, and it is why turned components are produced for concentricity, fit and repeatability rather than for appearance.
The practical consequence is that on a turned part, the critical features are almost always dimensional rather than geometric. On a shaft it is the journal diameter, the keyway and the shoulder positions — those decide how it locates, transmits torque and how long its bearings last. On a bush it is bore-to-shaft and OD-to-housing, the working fit. On a pin it is the diameter and the chamfer form, which is what lets a press-fit pin start square and seat without shaving its bore.
Because those features are defined by the mating parts rather than by us, we manufacture strictly to your released drawing. Where a drawing leaves a material or a finish open, we will raise it before cutting rather than assume.
CNC turned parts in metal and engineering plastic
We turn both metals and engineering plastics on the same drawing-driven basis. In metals that means stainless steel 304, 316, 316L, 410 and 420, carbon and alloy steel, brass, phosphor bronze and aluminium; in engineering plastics, nylon (PA6/PA66), cast nylon, UHMWPE, HDPE, PTFE and PEEK. Other grades can be arranged on request.
Material choice on a turned part is usually driven by the load, the environment and whether the position is washed down or runs dry. Stainless grades go where corrosion or washdown matters; carbon and alloy steels where strength and wear resistance lead; brass and phosphor bronze into bearing and fitting positions; nylon, UHMWPE and acetal where weight, quiet running or freedom from lubrication matter more than absolute strength.
Turning is also combined with secondary operations where the part needs them — perforation on stainless filter elements, gear cutting on drive components, and VMC machining on parts that carry both turned and prismatic features.
Prototype through repeat batch
Quantities are quoted per requirement, from a single prototype through repeat batches. For a first article we would normally expect to discuss the drawing before cutting; for repeat supply, batch references mean an approved component is re-produced to the same drawing revision and the same inspection requirements each time.
That matters most for maintenance and replacement parts. A turned component ordered eighteen months after the first batch should arrive interchangeable with the one already in the machine — same fit, same critical dimensions, same inspection record behind it.
Inspection and quality system
On a turned component the inspection plan follows the diameters. Material is verified before the bar is cut, the first component of each batch is checked against the critical diameters and lengths, in-process checks run through the batch, and finished parts are verified to the drawing before packing under batch identification.
What gets treated as critical is taken from the drawing and the part's function, not from a generic checklist — a bearing journal and a clearance diameter on the same shaft do not warrant the same scrutiny. Batch references support repeat orders, so an approved turned component is re-produced to the same drawing revision batch after batch.

- Do you manufacture CNC turned components to our drawing?
- Yes — drawing-based manufacture is the normal route. Send the released drawing with the material grade and quantity. Where the drawing leaves a material, finish or thread class open, we raise it before machining rather than assume.
- What kinds of turned parts do you produce?
- Shafts and rollers, bushes and sleeves, pins and spacers, threaded components, flanged shafts, flanges and adaptors, and stainless filter elements. Parts that do not fit a standard family are handled as customer-specific components.
- Which materials can you turn?
- Stainless steel 304, 316, 316L, 410 and 420, carbon and alloy steel, brass, phosphor bronze and aluminium; and engineering plastics including nylon (PA6/PA66), cast nylon, UHMWPE, HDPE, PTFE and PEEK. Other grades can be arranged on request.
- Will you quote a single prototype, or only production quantities?
- Both. Quantities are quoted per requirement — a single prototype, a replacement part, or repeat batches. Lead time is confirmed with the quotation.
- Can you also machine prismatic features on a turned part?
- Yes. Parts carrying both turned and milled features are produced across CNC turning and VMC machining — flanges and adaptors are a common example.
- Do you sign an NDA before a technical exchange?
- Yes. An NDA can be arranged before any detailed technical exchange, including before drawings are shared.
