What a food-contact part has to survive
Three things govern a component on a food line: washdown, food contact and wear. Each pulls in a different direction. A material hard enough to resist wear may not tolerate the cleaning chemistry; a geometry that sheds product cleanly may be weaker than one that does not. The part that lasts is the one where those three were reconciled on the drawing rather than discovered in service.
Food contact is the constraint that cannot be traded away. A contact part must be cleanable, non-corroding and safe against product contamination — and it has to stay that way after months of cleaning cycles, not only on the day it was fitted.
Washdown is what turns a mechanical decision into a material one. Positions that are hosed down daily rule out materials that absorb, corrode or need lubrication near product, which is why so much of this work is in food-grade polymer rather than metal.
Hygienic design lives in the details
Hygienic design is not a grade of material, it is a set of geometric decisions: surfaces without crevices that trap product, materials that stand up to cleaning chemistry, and geometry that drains rather than pools. A scraper blade holding a bead of product along a moulded edge is a cleaning problem every shift for the life of the machine.
Those decisions are carried on your drawing. Our review confirms manufacturability against it and raises anything that would compromise the hygienic intent before the component is produced — a rib that creates a pocket, or a radius too tight to clean, is worth catching before a batch rather than after.
Star wheels and guides carry a second requirement on top: they index and steer product, so the pocket form or the track profile is a functional dimension. A star wheel that cleans perfectly but indexes half a millimetre out is not a usable part.
Materials and process for food-grade parts
Food-grade guides, scraper blades, star wheels and fittings are injection moulded to drawing in white PP and acetal. Acetal holds tooth and pocket dimensions with low friction; PP suits fittings and guides where chemical tolerance leads. Elevator buckets and other product-contact parts are moulded in food-grade HDPE.
Engineering plastics: nylon (PA6/PA66), cast nylon, UHMWPE, HDPE, PTFE and PEEK. Metals: stainless steel 304, 316, 316L, 410 and 420, carbon and alloy steel, brass, phosphor bronze and aluminium. Other grades can be arranged on request.
Where a component is better cut than formed we machine it instead. UHMWPE chain guide rails and wear strips, for example, are produced to drawing by machining rather than moulding, because UHMWPE does not flow like a conventional thermoplastic.
Inspection and repeat supply
We manufacture strictly to your released drawing. Material is verified before machining begins, the first component of each batch is checked against the critical dimensions, in-process checks run through the batch, and finished components are verified to the drawing before packing under batch identification.
For a food line that matters more than usual, because a replacement contact part has to match not only the machine but the hygienic approval the original was fitted under. Batch references mean an approved component is re-produced to the same drawing revision each time rather than re-interpreted from a worn sample.
