Wear, dust and outdoor exposure

Agricultural machinery is a harsher environment than most industrial equipment, and for a different reason: it is not the load, it is the dust. Abrasive dust gets into every clearance, and a bush that would run for years on a factory floor becomes a consumable when it is working as a bearing against grit.

Outdoor exposure compounds it. Implements sit in the weather between seasons, so a part is often corroding while it is not being used, and then loaded hard the moment it is. That combination is why material choice on an agricultural part is rarely about peak strength and usually about how the part behaves once conditions are bad.

The practical consequence is that these components are designed to be replaced. A bush protects the housing bored around it, and a pin protects the linkage it runs in — both are cheaper to change than what they are protecting, which is the whole point of specifying them.

Bushes, sleeves and pins

On a bush the critical features are bore-to-shaft and OD-to-housing — the working fit at both surfaces. Those two fits decide whether it seats correctly and how long the assembly lasts before it is replaced, and they are what get verified against the drawing.

We turn pins and spacers to drawing with precise chamfers and stepped profiles, in steels, stainless, aluminium or brass as specified. Chamfer form matters more than it looks: it is what lets a press-fit pin start square and seat without shaving its bore, and a pin that shaves its bore on the way in takes the fit with it.

Bronze and steel are the conventional materials in this work — bronze and brass into bearing positions where a part runs against a steel shaft without galling, and carbon and alloy steels where strength and wear resistance lead.

Materials and the case for each

Engineering plastics: nylon (PA6/PA66), cast nylon, UHMWPE, HDPE, PTFE and PEEK. Metals: stainless steel 304, 316, 316L, 410 and 420, carbon and alloy steel, brass, phosphor bronze and aluminium. Other grades can be arranged on request.

Material choice follows the position rather than a preference. Stainless grades go where corrosion or washdown matters; carbon and alloy steels where strength and wear resistance lead; brass and phosphor bronze into bearing and fitting positions; and engineering plastics such as UHMWPE and nylon where weight, quiet running or freedom from lubrication matter more than absolute strength.

On an implement that last category is worth considering more often than it is. A polymer wear part that needs no grease removes a maintenance point from a machine that spends its life somewhere a grease gun is inconvenient.

Replacement parts and repeat batches

We manufacture strictly to your released drawing. Material is verified before machining begins, the first component of each batch is checked against the critical dimensions, in-process checks run through the batch, and finished components are verified to the drawing before packing under batch identification.

Most agricultural enquiries are replacement enquiries and many arrive as a worn part rather than a drawing. That is workable: a sample with dimensions and photographs, the material if known, and the position it runs in is usually enough to confirm what the replacement has to be.

For repeat supply, batch references mean an approved component is re-produced to the same drawing revision and the same inspection requirements each time — which matters when a machine is rebuilt a season after the first batch was fitted.
