What acetal is the right material for

Acetal (POM) holds tooth dimensions with low friction, and that single sentence explains most of where it is specified. A gear or a sprocket is only as good as the tooth form it keeps under load and over time — a polymer that creeps or swells loses the mesh it was cut or moulded to, and the drive gets noisy before it gets loose.

Low friction matters for the same reason it matters on a bearing: a drive that runs without a lubricant film has to get its low friction from the material itself. On food and grain lines, where lubricant near product is the thing being designed out, that property is often the whole reason acetal is on the drawing.

Where acetal gives up ground is impact. Nylon adds toughness and quiet mesh against steel partners, which suits drives that start under load. Acetal holds dimensions better. Neither is the better material in the abstract — the choice follows the drive.

Acetal gears, sprockets and star wheels

Nylon and acetal gears, sprockets and star wheels drive conveyors and transmit power where metal gearing would be noisy, need lubrication, or corrode — food processing and material handling being the classic cases.

The keyed bore must fit your shaft and the tooth form must mesh with the existing drive, so both are treated as critical features and verified against the drawing or the sample being replaced. On a star wheel the pocket form matters as much as the bore, because the pocket is what indexes and carries the product.

We machine and mould these depending on the part and the quantity. A machined acetal sprocket with a keyed bore is the direct route to a single replacement; a moulded one reproduces the same form identically across a repeat batch.

Acetal in food-grade guides and fittings

Food-processing machinery needs contact parts that are cleanable, non-corroding and safe against product contamination — guides, scraper blades, star wheels and fittings. These are injection moulded to drawing in white PP and acetal, where the hygienic requirements are as much a part of the specification as the dimensions.

Hygienic design lives in the details: surfaces without crevices that trap product, materials that stand up to cleaning chemistry, and geometry that drains rather than pools. A scraper blade that holds a bead of product along a moulded edge is a cleaning problem every shift for the life of the machine.

Your drawing carries those decisions; our review confirms manufacturability against it and raises anything that would compromise the hygienic intent before the component is produced.

Acetal and POM components — common questions

Is acetal the same as POM and Delrin?
Acetal and POM are the same material — polyoxymethylene. Delrin is a trade name for a homopolymer grade of it. We work to whatever the drawing specifies and confirm the grade at review.
Why choose acetal over nylon for a gear?

Do you machine or mould acetal parts?
Both, depending on the part and the quantity. A single replacement sprocket is usually faster machined; a repeat batch of the same form is better moulded. We confirm the process at the review stage.
Can you supply acetal parts for food-contact positions?
Yes. Food-grade star guides, scraper blades and fittings are moulded in white PP and acetal, with cleanable surfaces free of crevices that trap product and geometry that drains rather than pools.
Can you match our existing tooth form and keyed bore?
Yes. Both are treated as critical features and verified against the drawing or the sample being replaced, because a gear that meshes but will not seat on the shaft is as unusable as one that does neither.
