What VMC machining is the right process for

A vertical machining centre works on prismatic parts: components whose features are arranged across faces rather than around an axis. Housings, mounting plates, brackets, manifolds and covers all fall here. The defining operations are milling, drilling and tapping, and the controlled features are flatness, hole position, bolt-circle geometry and thread depth.

These are the features that decide whether a part assembles. A mounting plate whose hole pattern is out of position does not fit, however good its surface finish; a tapped hole at the wrong depth strips on assembly. So on VMC parts, positional relationships between features usually matter more than any single dimension, and that is what inspection concentrates on.

Flanges and adaptors sit across both processes — the face and bore are turned, the bolt-circle holes are milled. Producing them across CNC turning and VMC machining in one shop removes a handover, and with it a source of stack-up between the turned and milled features.

Materials and combined turning + milling work

VMC components are machined across the same material range as our turned work: stainless steel 304, 316, 316L, 410 and 420, carbon and alloy steel, brass, phosphor bronze and aluminium, together with engineering plastics including nylon (PA6/PA66), cast nylon, UHMWPE, HDPE, PTFE and PEEK. Other grades can be arranged on request. Aluminium and the machinable polymers see more milling work than turning, simply because plates, covers and housings are the shapes that suit them.

Where a component carries both concentric and prismatic features, it is produced across both processes rather than split between suppliers. Customer-specific components — parts that do not fit any standard family — are routinely handled this way, including work that combines CNC turning, VMC machining and injection moulding on a single assembly.

Gear and worm gearing work is machined and gear cut to the drawing tooth data. As with every other family, the tooth data comes from your drawing; we do not substitute a nearest-standard equivalent without raising it first.

Drawing-based manufacture for OEMs and machine builders

Most VMC enquiries come from OEMs, machine builders and maintenance departments who already have a released drawing and need it made accurately and repeatably. That is the case we are set up for: manufacture to the drawing, inspect against the drawing, and keep a batch reference so the next order matches this one.

Quantities are quoted per requirement, from a single prototype through repeat batches, and lead time is confirmed with the quotation. For a first article we would normally expect to discuss the drawing before machining begins, particularly where hole positions or thread specifications are tight to the mating assembly.

Inspection and quality system

On prismatic parts the inspection plan follows position rather than size. Material is verified before machining, the first component of each batch is checked against hole positions, bolt-circle geometry and thread specifications, in-process checks run through the batch, and finished parts are verified to the drawing before packing under batch identification.

That emphasis matters because a milled part usually fails on assembly, not on measurement — a plate whose pattern is out of position will not bolt up however well each individual hole is cut. Where a drawing carries a datum scheme, inspection is referenced to it rather than to a convenient face.

What is the difference between your CNC turning and VMC machining work?
CNC turning produces parts whose features are concentric — shafts, bushes, pins, threaded parts. VMC machining produces prismatic parts whose features are arranged across faces — housings, mounting plates, brackets. Parts needing both, such as flanges and adaptors, are produced across the two processes in-house.

Yes. Batch references support repeat orders, so an approved component is re-produced to the same drawing revision and inspection requirements batch after batch.
