What a grain line does to its components

Grain handling is an abrasion problem before it is anything else. Product moves continuously, carries dust and fines, and loads the same components in the same places for entire seasons. Abrasion, wear and continuous load are the three conditions every part on the line is designed against, and they are why so much of this equipment is built around parts that are meant to be replaced.

That changes what a good component is. A bucket or a wear strip is not judged on how long it survives, but on whether it wears predictably and is quick to change when it does. A part that lasts twice as long but takes a shift to replace can cost more than the one it replaced.

Continuous load is the reason nothing on a grain line gets a rest between duty cycles. A bucket elevator running at rated capacity fills and empties every bucket on every revolution, so a feature that is marginal at the design stage is exercised millions of times before the season ends.

Elevator buckets for mills, feed plants and silos

Elevator buckets do the lifting in bucket elevators — the vertical legs that move grain, flour and feed through mills, feed plants and silo installations rated from 50 to 300 TPH. We injection-mould deep-formed and shovel-type buckets in food-grade polymer, in a family of sizes.

Three features decide whether a replacement bucket works. The deep-formed cup sets carrying capacity. The reinforced lip is what survives digging into the product column at the boot, which is where a bucket does its hardest work and where a thin lip fails first. And the twin bolt mounting holes must match your belt’s existing punching, so a changeover is bolt-off, bolt-on rather than a re-drilling job on a stopped line.

Food-blue is used for the same reason across the industry: blue does not occur in grain, flour or feed, so a fragment of a broken bucket is visible against the product it was carrying.

Wear parts, guides and drive components

Beyond the buckets, a grain line runs on wear parts. Chain guide rails and wear strips take abrasion off the machine frame and are replaced on service; rollers carry and track belts; polymer gears and sprockets drive conveyors where metal gearing would be noisy, need lubrication, or corrode.

Removing the lubricant from a drive near product is often the whole reason a polymer gear is specified, and it is why the keyed bore and tooth form are treated as critical features — a gear that meshes correctly but will not seat on the shaft is as unusable as one that does neither.

Shafts and rollers on the metal side are CNC-turned with ground journals and controlled lengths where the drawing calls for them, in the stainless and carbon grades the position requires.

Repeat supply through the season

We manufacture strictly to your released drawing. Material is verified before machining begins, the first component of each batch is checked against the critical dimensions, in-process checks run through the batch, and finished components are verified to the drawing before packing under batch identification.

Grain work is seasonal and repeat supply is the normal case rather than the exception. A bucket ordered two seasons after the first batch has to fit the same belt punching as the one it replaces, which is why the approved drawing revision, not a re-measured worn sample, is what a repeat batch is made against.

If you are replacing an existing part and have no drawing, a sample with dimensions and photographs is a workable starting point — for buckets, the belt punching detail is the single most useful thing to send.
