What brass is the right material for
Brass goes into bearing and fitting positions, alongside phosphor bronze, for a combination of properties that is hard to get from steel: it machines cleanly to a fine finish, it runs against a steel shaft without galling, and it does not corrode in the damp and washdown positions where a mild steel part would rust into its housing.
Machinability is not a minor point on a turned part. A material that cuts cleanly holds a chamfer form and a bore finish that a tougher material would tear, and on a bush the bore finish is part of the working fit rather than a cosmetic property.
Brass is also the conventional material for small threaded parts that must be assembled and disassembled repeatedly without seizing — which is why threaded studs and precision nuts are so often specified in it.
Brass bushes, sleeves, pins and spacers
On a bush the critical features are bore-to-shaft and OD-to-housing — the working fit at both surfaces. A bush is a wear part that protects the housing around it, so the two fits are what decide whether it seats correctly and how long the assembly lasts before it is replaced.
We turn pins and spacers to drawing with precise chamfers and stepped profiles, in steels, stainless, aluminium or brass as specified. Chamfer form matters more than it looks: it is what lets a press-fit pin start square and seat without shaving its bore, and a pin that shaves its bore on the way in takes the fit with it.
Brass bushes and sleeves are produced with chamfered bores for the same reason. The chamfer is a functional feature on these parts, not a finishing detail, and it is verified against the drawing along with the diameters.
Threaded studs and precision nuts
Threaded components are turned to drawing with the thread form, class and length treated as critical features. On a stud the thread has to mate with something already in service, so the specification on the drawing is the requirement rather than a starting point for substitution.
Where a threaded part carries both turned and prismatic features, turning is combined with VMC machining so that flats, drilling patterns and cross-holes are produced accurately relative to the turned diameters from one manufacturing source.
For repeat supply, batch references mean an approved component is re-produced to the same drawing revision and the same inspection requirements each time. If you are replacing an existing brass part and have no drawing, a sample with dimensions and photographs is a workable starting point.

- What brass parts do you manufacture?

- Do you also work in phosphor bronze?
- Yes. Brass and phosphor bronze both go into bearing and fitting positions, and we work to whichever the drawing specifies. Other grades can be arranged on request.
- Why is the chamfer treated as a critical feature?
- On a press-fit pin the chamfer form is what lets the pin start square and seat without shaving its bore. A pin that shaves its bore takes the fit with it, so the chamfer is verified along with the diameters.
- Can you produce brass parts with cross-holes and flats?
- Yes. Turning is combined with VMC machining where a part carries both turned and prismatic features, so drilling patterns and flats are accurate relative to the turned diameters from one source.
- Can you supply brass parts without a drawing?
- Usually yes. A sample with dimensions and photographs is a workable starting point — we confirm the material and the critical features, including the fits and the thread specification, before producing anything.
