What Are Rice Mill Elevator Buckets Made Of?
Rice mill elevator buckets are injection-moulded in food-grade HDPE or nylon. Polymer has largely replaced pressed steel in food-contact elevators because it resists abrasion without shedding metal fragments into product, weighs less on the belt, and does not corrode in washdown or humid grain storage.
Why polymer replaced steel in food-contact elevators
A bucket elevator moves an abrasive product continuously. Paddy, brown rice and bran all scour whatever carries them, and the bucket takes that wear at the boot where it digs into the product column. Pressed steel buckets wear too, but they wear by thinning at the lip and eventually shedding metal into the grain stream. In a food line that is a contamination route, not merely a maintenance cost.
Food-grade HDPE and nylon abrade without that failure mode. They also weigh substantially less, which matters across a full belt of buckets: lower rotating mass on the head and boot pulleys, and less load on the belt itself. Unlike steel they do not rust in washdown areas or in humid storage.
HDPE or nylon — which to specify
Both are food grade and both are injection-moulded. The practical difference is stiffness against impact tolerance. Nylon (PA6/PA66) is stiffer and holds its form under load, which suits deep-formed buckets carrying a full charge. HDPE is more forgiving of knocks, which suits boots where buckets take a harder entry into the product column.
If your existing buckets work and you are simply replacing a worn set, match what is already on the belt rather than switching material — the elevator was commissioned around that behaviour.
The three features that decide whether a bucket works
The deep-formed cup sets carrying capacity. The reinforced lip is what survives digging into the product column at the boot, and it is the first thing to fail on an under-specified bucket. The twin bolt mounting holes must match the punching already on your belt, or a changeover becomes a re-drilling job on a stopped line rather than bolt-off, bolt-on.
