Nylon or UHMWPE for Conveyor Wear Parts?

UHMWPE is the better choice where the part slides against chain or abrasive product, and nylon PA6 where it carries load or needs a moulded form. Both are wear materials, but they earn their place differently — UHMWPE by wearing slowly against a moving partner, nylon by being tougher and formable.

UHMWPE: the sliding surface

UHMWPE is specified where something slides along it continuously. A chain guide rail or a wear strip exists to take abrasion off the machine frame and be replaced on service — it is consumable by design, and UHMWPE wears slowly enough against a steel chain to make that a scheduled task rather than a breakdown.

It also runs without lubrication and does not corrode, which is what lets it into wet and washdown positions where a metal rail would need grease that cannot be used near product.

Its limitation follows from the same property that makes it good. UHMWPE does not flow like a conventional thermoplastic, so it cannot be injection moulded — it is machined to drawing from sheet or rod. Long rails and profiled strips suit that; a complex formed shape does not.

Nylon PA6: the formed, loaded part

PA6 combines wear resistance with quiet running against steel, and that is why it displaces metal guides in conveying equipment. It is tougher than UHMWPE, so it holds up where a part takes impact or carries load rather than only being slid across.

It is also mouldable, which changes what shapes are practical. A guide and wear block with a radiused track surface and mounting holes is injection-moulded in nylon PA6 — a form that would be slow and wasteful to cut from solid.

Nylon absorbs more moisture than UHMWPE, which matters in permanently wet positions because dimensional stability drifts with it. That is one of the reasons a long submerged or washdown rail tends toward UHMWPE even where nylon would carry the load.

Choosing between them in practice

Ask what the part is doing rather than what it is made of. If something slides along its face continuously and the part is meant to be consumed, UHMWPE. If the part is a formed component that carries load, takes impact, or needs a shape that has to be moulded, nylon PA6.

A conveyor often uses both: UHMWPE strips along the chain run, nylon blocks where the track changes direction or takes a knock. They are not competing choices so much as different jobs on the same machine.

Which lasts longer on a chain guide?
UHMWPE, in a sliding position against steel chain. That is the job it is specified for — it wears slowly and predictably so the changeover can be scheduled.
Can UHMWPE be injection moulded?
No. Its molecular weight is exactly what gives it the wear resistance, and it means the material does not flow like a conventional thermoplastic. UHMWPE parts are machined from sheet or rod.
Why use nylon if UHMWPE wears better?
Nylon is tougher and mouldable. Where a part takes impact, carries load, or needs a formed shape with mounting features, PA6 does a job UHMWPE cannot.
Does moisture affect the choice?
It can. Nylon absorbs more moisture than UHMWPE and its dimensions drift with it, which is one reason permanently wet positions tend toward UHMWPE even where nylon would carry the load.
